MV: Odometer Disclosure

Federal and state law require odometer disclosure upon the transfer of ownership of any motor vehicle (with limited exceptions) nine (9) years old or newer.

  • Disclosure consists of a statement of what the vehicle’s odometer actually reads and whether that figure is actual mileage, not actual, or in excess of the mechanical limits of the odometer.
  • The disclosure must be attested to by both the transferor and transferee.

Disclosure statements are often incorporated into certificate of title assignments. A separate Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form 729) is available for downloading from the Forms section of this site.
