Up to the Minute...Press Release Tax Rebate Information Taxpayers who file a Federal income tax return just to receive the Federal rebate payment (also known as the economic stimulus payment) do not need to file an Oklahoma income tax return unless they meet Oklahoma filing requirements, announced the Oklahoma Tax Commission. For eligible taxpayers to receive the Federal rebate they first must file a 2007 Federal income tax return. This applies to individuals, including low income senior citizens, who are not required to file a Federal return but are still eligible for the rebate. However, these individuals won’t need to file an Oklahoma income tax return if they don’t meet Oklahoma filing requirements. “There is no need for Oklahoma taxpayers to file an Oklahoma return unnecessarily if they are only filing a Federal return to obtain their rebate payment,” said Paula Ross, Tax Commission spokesperson. “Oklahomans need to know that this rebate is being issued from the Federal government, and not Oklahoma; there is not a similar state payment.” To receive the rebate payment taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, $3,000 of income and file a 2007 Federal tax return. The rebate will not be included as income on either the Federal or Oklahoma tax returns next year. Information on who is required to file an Oklahoma return can be found on the agency website at www.tax.ok.gov (click on “FAQ’s”, followed by the “Income Tax Questions” link). Filing requirements can also be found on page three of the individual income tax packet.
