Press Release

Countdown! Three Weeks to Filing Deadline;
Income Tax Deadline Extended

The Oklahoma individual tax filing deadline has been extended this year to April 17, 2007, giving Oklahomans an extra day to file their 2006 state income tax returns.

This decision aligns with many other states around the country that have chosen to extend their state filing dates after the Internal Revenue Service changed the federal filing date to compensate for Emancipation Day, a legal holiday that falls on April 16 in Washington, D.C.

The new date applies to other income tax filing deadlines as well. Taxpayers will also have until April 17 th to file for an extension and to make their first quarter estimated income tax payment.

All valid six-month extensions filed on or before April 17, 2007 will extend the due date for filing a 2006 calendar year income tax return to October 17, 2007. It should be noted that an extension of time to file an income tax return is not an extension of time for payment. If filing an extension, 90 percent of the tax liability must be paid on or before the original due date of the return.

In 2008, Oklahoma will revert back to the usual deadline of April 15.

Electronic filing of tax returns is the quickest and most efficient way to file. Taxpayers receiving a refund who file electronically can usually expect their refund in five to seven days. Taxpayers can also choose to have refunds directly deposited into their checking or savings account.

For more information about filing Oklahoma state tax returns, and answers to many tax questions, may be found on the agency website at www.tax.ok.gov. Taxpayers may also call the agency Taxpayer Assistance office in-state toll-free at 1 (800) 522-8165 and press “0” to speak to a representative.
