Up to the Minute..Press Release 1M Filers Accepted; Filing Deadline ApproachingMore than 1,000,000 taxpayers have already filed their income tax returns with the Oklahoma Tax Commission. As the filing deadline approaches the OTC would like to remind taxpayers about the upcoming filing deadlines as well as the quickest way to file, and receive their tax refund. This year April 18th is the deadline for individuals to file their tax year 2010 income tax returns if filing by paper. Taxpayers choosing to file electronically have until April 20th to file; if there is a balance due with the return, payment must also be made electronically at the same time to avoid any delinquent penalty or interest. “Even with the extended deadline for filing individual taxes, we have seen a slight increase in the amount of returns filed already for this year,” said Paula Ross, Oklahoma Tax Commission spokesperson. “Most importantly it seems that more taxpayers are taking advantage of filing electronically, which is of a benefit to both the taxpayer and our agency.” To date more than 1.1 million returns have been filed of which 835,000 returns have been filed electronically. E-filing accounts for 77% of the returns filed so far this year. Taxpayers benefit from e-filing their returns by seeing a reduction in mathematical errors, knowing when their return has been accepted by the OTC, and when expecting a refund will usually receive it in a matter of days versus the several weeks it takes for a paper return to process. Information regarding e-filing returns, answers for many tax questions and to find e-filing option, including free filing of returns, please visit the agency website at www.tax.ok.gov.
