Online Insurance Verification System in Place
Oklahoma’s new electronic system to verify vehicle insurance at time of registration is now online and fully operational.
“By validating insurance electronically we will know right away if a driver has a valid policy in place,” said Paula Ross, Oklahoma Tax Commission spokesperson. This process will assist law enforcement in keeping uninsured motorists off Oklahoma roads.
The system, which has been in a testing mode since October 2008, is fully operational and in use by the Department of Public Safety, tag agents and the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
Registrants will still need to present an insurance verification card when renewing vehicle registrations. Information presented on the card will be entered into an online database which is then matched up to verify the insurance policy is valid and current.
“We encourage taxpayers to review their vehicle insurance policy to make sure that the information and policy are up to date prior to registering a vehicle in the state of Oklahoma,” said Paula Ross. “If the information is not current or cannot be confirmed by the database, then registration will not be issued.”
The online insurance verification system was mandated by legislation. The online system is a joint project of the Department of Public Safety, the Oklahoma Tax Commission and the state Department of Insurance. DPS utilizes the system to verify insurance coverage during road side stops.
