The new plate will become available for all Oklahomans beginning in early 2009. The plate will replace Oklahomans current standard issue regulation motor vehicle tag. For Oklahoma motorists who want to retain their existing plate number, the 2008 Retention Program has been established. Oklahomans who have a vehicle currently registered in the State of Oklahoma have the option to retain the current plate number associated with that vehicle. Oklahomans however must meet the deadline of November 1, 2008 to reserve and pay in order to retain their current plate number for the new plates. The cost to reserve the duplicate plate number on the new plate design is $17 and is in addition to the annual registration renewal fees. Taxpayers can apply and pay to retain their current plate number either online on the Oklahoma Tax Commission website or via paper application sent in through the mail. A downloadable paper application, Form 710-Z: License Plate Retention Form, can be found on the agency site at www.tax.ok.gov. The new plates will be issued beginning in January 2009. Oklahomans who have reserved their existing plate numbers will be among the first in the state to sport the newly designed plate.
