Up to the Minute..Press Release The license plate retention program has ended. - January 2011 License Plate Retention Program Extended through 2009 With the release of the new Oklahoma license plate set to begin in January 2009, the deadline for motorists to retain their current plate number has been extended. For Oklahoma motorists who want to retain their existing plate number in the new design, the Plate Retention Program has been established and will run until December 2009. Oklahomans have the option to retain the current plate number associated with their vehicle when receiving the new license plate. Oklahomans however must reserve their current tag number prior to renewing their car tags in order to retain their current plate number for the new plates. The new plate will become available for all Oklahomans beginning in early 2009. The plate will replace Oklahomans current standard issue regulation motor vehicle tag. The cost to reserve the duplicate plate number on the new plate design is $17 and is in addition to the annual registration renewal fees. “It is important for motorists to understand the new license plate design will be issued for every vehicle tag renewed at no additional cost,” said Paula Ross, Oklahoma Tax Commission spokesperson. “What we are offering during the plate retention program is an opportunity for people to keep the same number that is on their current tag for a fee of $17.” Motorists can apply and pay to retain their current plate number either online on the Oklahoma Tax Commission website, via paper application sent in through the mail, or by visiting a tag agent. Downloadable applications, Form 710-Z: License Plate Retention Form, can be found on the agency site at www.tax.ok.gov. As authorized by Senate Bill 2348, monies generated from the license plate retention program will be allocated to the Department of Public Safety with the primary purpose of supporting the Driver License Examining Division. More information regarding the license plate retention program as well as a sample of the redesigned plate can be found on the Tax Commission website at www.tax.ok.gov.
